The monthly home restock walk-through

Ten minutes on the first of the month replaces a year of "we're out again" runs. Walk the house in this order, glance at each item, restock what's low, write the date on what you replace. That's the whole system.

☐ 1. Furnace filter — squint test

Grey and furry = swap now; every ~90 days regardless. Multi-pack lives next to the furnace.

Find your size · pick the right MERV

Humidifier mounted on the furnace? Its water panel isn't the furnace filter. AprilAire says most of its panels are due once per heating season, so swap it in the same month you turn the heat on. Find the panel number.

☐ 2. Kitchen water — two checks

Fridge filter light on, or 6 months since the marker date? Match your model. Pitcher filter over 2 months old? Swap it.

☐ 3. Air purifier — filter light

Levoit filters run 6–8 months, Winix and Coway HEPA about a year (sooner with pets or smoke). If the light's on, it's a fan, not a purifier — e.g. the Levoit Core 300-P genuine filter; other models in the purifier filter finder.

Same trip: is the vacuum losing suction? Rinse its foam and felt filters and let them dry fully before refitting. Grey, hardened or torn means a fresh kit. Shark owners: match the kit to your model.

☐ 4. Pet shelf — count, don't guess

Dog: bags under 100 left? Pads, wipes, treats low? The dog list. Cat: litter under half a box? The cat list.

☐ 5. Battery + bulb drawer

AA/AAA below a handful, or any dead bulb waiting? Add to this month's order — the smoke-alarm chirp always comes at 3 a.m.

☐ 6. The paper shelf

Paper towels, toilet paper, trash bags under a two-week supply? Restock at the bulk size — these never stop being needed.

Why this works

Every item above fails silently: filters clog without a sound, litter and bags run out at the least convenient moment, batteries die at night. One fixed monthly pass converts all of them from emergencies into a single boring errand — which is the entire philosophy of The Restock List.
