Every filter in your house is quietly on a countdown, and none of them ring a bell when it hits zero. Here's the whole schedule on one page — what each one is due, what actually happens when you skip it, and the standard replacement for each slot.
| Filter | Replace every | If you skip it | Standard pick |
|---|---|---|---|
| HVAC / furnace (1") | 90 days (60 with pets) | strained blower, dusty air, higher bills | Size chart · MERV guide |
| Refrigerator water | 6 months | slow dispenser, drifting taste | match your model |
| Water pitcher (Brita-type) | ~2 months / 40 gal | filter stops filtering, silently | Brita standard 3-pack |
| Air purifier (HEPA) | 6–8 months (sooner with pets/smoke) | the purifier becomes a fan | match your model |
| Humidifier wick | 1–2 months in season | mineral crust, musty output | find your filter code |
| Vacuum HEPA/bags | ~6 months / when full | lost suction, dust recirculation | Shark filters by model |
Don't memorize six schedules. Pick one day — the 1st of the month works — and do a 60-second walk-through: squint at the furnace filter, check the fridge indicator, look at the purifier's filter light. Replace what's due, write the date on the new one with a marker. Multi-packs exist precisely so the answer to "do we have a spare?" is always yes.
A filter is a trap. Once full, it either chokes airflow (HVAC, purifier, vacuum) or stops catching anything new (water). Replacement isn't upselling — it's how the product works.
Often, for taste-and-dust jobs — look for real certification marks. Go genuine where the appliance checks (newer GE/Samsung fridges) or where the warranty cares. Details in the fridge filter guide.
